Keuka College Softball Takes Two from SUNY Poly

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Keuka College Softball team swept a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday against SUNY Poly, winning Game 1 15-3 and Game 2 7-2.

Keuka College (7-5, 6-0 NEAC) got three hits from Katelyn Warren and Shannon Johnson. The home run helped Keuka to the sweep on Sunday with Tally McDonald, Alexa Brown, and Samantha Blum. McDonald's shot was a grand slam and a part of a six RBI game for the senior.

The pitching combo of Colleen Mooney and Janessa Vaadi got the wins for the Wolves. Each struck out five on their way to the complete game victories.

Keuka College 15 vs. SUNY Poly 3 – 5 innings

SUNY Poly scored the opening run of the game, but the Wolves got on the board in the second to take the lead. As a part of a five-run inning for the Wolves, Shannon Johnson had a two-run triple for Keuka College. The Wolves got back on the board with four more runs in the third. The scoring got going by Johnson with an RBI single. The big hit of the inning was a two-run triple by Tally McDonald. After the Wildcats scored two in the top of the fourth, the Wolves put the game away in the bottom. Johnson had another RBI single for the Wolves, but it was McDonald who provided the big hit once again. With the bases loaded, the senior put the ball over the centerfield fence for the grand slam. Keuka College would go on to win Game 1 over SUNY Poly 15-3 in five innings.

Lead Wolves: Shannon Johnson and Tally McDonald led Keuka's offense in the opener. Combined, they went 5-6 with five runs scored and 10 runs batted in. Johnson was 3-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs, all career highs, and McDonald was 2-3 with two runs scored and a career-high six RBIs.

Keuka College 7 vs. SUNY Poly 2

Once again, the Wildcats struck first. SUNY Poly plated a run in the top of the second inning for the early lead. Keuka College responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead 2-1. That lead was extended in the third as freshman Alexa Brown hit a two-run home run, the first of her career. Samantha Blum followed that up with a solo shot as the Wolves went back-to-back to take a 5-1 lead. The Wolves got late insurance runs on an RBI single by Maddie Dupuis and a sacrifice fly by Taylor Lindig as the Wolves continued onto the 7-2 victory.

Lead Wolf: Janessa Vaadi had a strong game pitching for the Wolves. The sophomore set a new career-high with five strikeouts in the game. Her four hits allowed was also the fewest she allowed in a start in her career.

KC Notes:

  • Keuka College improves to 34-7 all-time against SUNY Poly. The Wolves have won the last five meetings
  • The Wolves are now 23-5 against the Wildcats in NEAC games
  • Samantha Blum moved out of a tie and into sole possession of second place on the Keuka College Career Home Run list. The senior has hit 11 in her career
  • Blum also moved into a tie for seventh, scoring 81 runs in her career
  • Alysha Bachman played both games at first for Keuka College on Saturday. She has now totaled 715 putouts in her career, passing Sarah Fredricks '11 for the most in school history

Coming up for Keuka College: Keuka College will host SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday afternoon at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex. The Wolves have won the last six meetings with the Fighting Tigers and are 20-7 overall against SUNY Cobleskill.
