Box Score Sophomore Jessica Parmiter (Cortland, NY/Homer) had an RBI double and freshman Tally McDonald (Romulus, NY/Romulus) added an RBI single as the Keuka College softball team snapped a 9-all tie in the sixth inning to win Friday's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament opener.
McDonald finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and Parmiter was 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Storm (15-8) earned an 11-9 win over Penn State-Abington at SUNY Cobleskill in Cobleskill, N.Y.
Sophomore Ally Muller (Bath, NY/Haverling) was 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and senior Deliane Lessard (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) was 3-for-5 with an RBI in the win.
The Green and Gold advance to face SUNY Cobleskill (18-8) at 11 a.m. Saturday on day two of the double-elimination tournament.
Senior Jill Hart (Cowlesville, NY/Iroquois) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, classmate Katie Evangelista (Geneva, NY/Geneva) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and sophomore Mackenzie Cole (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg Free Academy) was 2-for-5 with a run scored to lift the Storm.
Freshman Samantha Blum (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie) was 1-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while senior Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) was 1-for-4 and had an RBI as the Storm compiled a season-high 20 hits against Abington (19-10).
All nine Storm hitters recorded a hit, and eight of the nine drove in a run against the Nittany Lions.
Gravel earned her ninth straight win and improved to 9-3 after allowing nine runs (three earned) with four strikeouts in a complete-game win.
Cole tripled to lead off the game and scored on Lessard's RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Hart added an RBI groundout as the Storm took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
Abington responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but McDonald had an RBI double and Gravel added an RBI single to give the Green and Gold a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the second.
The Nittany Lions got one run back in the second, but Parmiter put Keuka College up 5-3 on an RBI single in the third.
An Abington solo home run sliced the deficit to 5-4 before the Green and Gold pushed across four runs in the fourth.
With one out, Lessard singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Blum's RBI single. Muller extended the lead to 8-4 on a two-run home run, her team-leading fifth round-tripper this spring, and Evangelista added an RBI single to give the Storm a 9-4 edge.
Gravel held Abington scoreless in the bottom of the inning, but Keuka was also held scoreless in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Nittany Lions scored five runs, highlighted by a two-run home run, to even the score at 9-all.
But the Green and Gold wasted little time reclaiming the lead. Muller led off the sixth with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. Parmiter put the Storm up 10-9 on an RBI double, and McDonald's single scored Parmiter for a two-run lead.
Abington loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Gravel induced a groundout to end the threat. After the Storm were held scoreless in the top of the seventh, Gravel worked around a one-out single as the Storm won their tournament opener.
The double-elimination tournament continues all day Saturday, with a champion being crowned Sunday. The winner then earns the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III tournament.
Keuka and Cobleskill split the four regular season games.
