Box Score 2 The Keuka College softball team opened the 2014 season at Alfred University, and the Storm were swept by the Saxons 9-0 and 14-0 Wednesday afternoon in Alfred, N.Y.
Both games were called after five innings because of softball's mercy rule.
In the opener, sophomore Nicole Wright (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) had a pair of singles while freshman Alysha Bachman (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse) added a single for Keuka.
Senior Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) took the loss, striking out three batters over four innings.
Alfred scored two runs in the first, added a run in the second and third innings and tacked on five runs in the fourth inning to win.
In the nightcap, senior Deliane Lessard (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia), sophomore Mackenzie Cole (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg Free Academy) and freshman Tally McDonald (Romulus, NY/Romulus) each singled for the Storm (0-2), who were out-hit 18-3 by the Saxons (11-3).
Sophomore Liz Warren (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas A. Edison) struck out six batters and only issued two walks in the loss.
The Storm will open North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with a doubleheader at Morrisville State on Friday before traveling to NEAC rival SUNYIT for a doubleheader on Saturday, and SUNY Cobleskill for a doubleheader Sunday.
Keuka's home opener is a non-conference doubleheader against SUNY Geneseo April 8.
