Keuka College's softball team opened the 2013 season on a frigid Friday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Wells College.
The Storm (1-1, 1-1 NEAC), the six-time defending NEAC champions, lost the first game 4-0, the first time in 27 all-time meetings with the Express that Keuka didn't emerge victorious.
In the nightcap, freshman Liz Warren (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas A. Edison) hurled 3 2/3 innings of no-hit ball and tossed a one-hitter as the Storm rolled Wells (1-3, 1-1) 20-0 in five innings.
All told, 11 student-athletes recorded base hits in the second game. Freshman Ally Muller (Bath, NY/Haverling), sophomore Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) and juniors Katie Evangelista (Geneva, NY/Geneva), Brooke Lovell (Arkport, NY/Arkport) and Jill Hart (Cowlesville, NY/Iroquois) each drove in two runs in the win for Keuka.
Keuka's bats mustered only five singles in dropping the season opener. Neither school scored during the first three innings until the Express pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout from Kendrick Wilson and an RBI single up the middle from Karley Raczynski.
The Green and Gold got runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to push across a run. In the fifth, Lovell reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base, and Hart reached on an error and stole second giving Keuka runners on second and third with two outs, but a groundout ended the threat.
Wells tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh and Keuka was retired in order to end the game.
Junior Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) allowed four runs on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts in the complete game.
In the second game, Keuka jumped all over Wells, scoring early and often. The Storm scored 10 first-inning runs on four hits, four walks and 12 wild pitches. Evangelista had an RBI single, Hart added an RBI double, Muller had an RBI single and Evangelista collected her second RBI single of the inning to lead the barrage.
The Storm tacked on nine runs on eight hits in the second, highlighted Proper's inside-the-park home run and an RBI triple from Muller. Lovell added an RBI single, Hart drilled an RBI double and junior Deliane Lessard (Rochester, NY/Genesee Community College) added an RBI single during the inning for the Green and Gold, who won via the mercy rule after 4 1/2 innings.
Warren struck out nine and surrendered two walks in earning her first collegiate win. Muller finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored, Evangelista and Hart were each 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored while Proper was 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored for the Storm.
