Juniors Montana McDonald (Romulus, NY/Romulus) and Jill Hart (Cowlesville, NY/Iroquois) each drove in two runs during a five-run fifth inning as the Keuka College softball team defeated SUNY Cobleskill 7-4 in game one of Saturday's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader, but the Storm dropped game two 2-1 to split the doubleheader at Fighting Tiger Park in Cobkeskill, N.Y.
Neither team scored in the opener until the Storm (14-8, 14-4 NEAC) broke through for five runs in the fifth. After freshman Jessica Parmiter (Cortland, NY/Homer) doubled to leadoff the inning, sophomore Haley Jordan (Auburn, NY/Auburn) reached on an error and stole second to give Keuka runners at second and third with no outs.
McDonald put the Storm up 2-0 with a two-run single, then Hart doubled the lead with a two-run double that plated sophomore Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) and freshman Ally Muller (Bath, NY/Haverling). Junior Brooke Lovell (Arkport, NY/Arkport) followed with an RBI single as the Green and Gold took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
Muller extended the lead to 7-0 on a one-out, two-run double in the sixth inning. Cobleskill scored three runs on three hits and three errors in the sixth inning, and added a run on a groundout in the seventh, but junior Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) ended the game on a groundout to improve to 7-4.
She allowed four unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts in the complete-game win, and lowered her earned-run average to a team-leading 1.97.
Proper was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Lovell was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Keuka, which out-hit Cobleskill 10-5.
In game two, the Storm mustered only two singles and a double off Cobleskill starter Erin Wadsworth.
The Tigers led 1-0 after one inning, and neither team scored until the Storm pushed across a run in the top of the fourth. Proper reached on an error, advanced to second and third base on passed balls and scored on a fielding error.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. Madeline DeMilio, who had three of Cobleskill's six hits, led off with a double and scored on a fielding error as the Tigers salvaged a split with the Green and Gold.
Freshman Liz Warren (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas Edison) allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with four strikeouts in the hard-luck loss. She falls to 7-4 on the year.
Keuka closes out the regular season with two doubleheaders on the road. The Storm travel to Morrisville State at 1 p.m. Sunday and Ithaca College at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The NEAC postseason tournament runs May 3-5. Keuka is the six-time defending NEAC champion.
