KEUKA PARK, N.Y.— The Keuka College Softball team fell in a doubleheader to Alfred State University on Wednesday evening.
Keuka College (13-20, 6-8 Empire 8) lost game one 9-6, and lost to a strong Pioneer offense in game two 18-5 in five innings. One Wolf had a standout day at the plate, first-year
Hailey Jasinski (Buffalo, N.Y. / North Collins) recorded four hits and two runs batted in across the two games.
Makenna DeMoney (Conklin, N.Y. / Susquehanna Valley) also had great at-bats with three hits and three runs batted in on the day.
Alfred State 9 – Keuka College 6
The Pioneers struck first in game one, they got out to a 5-0 lead through five innings. A single from
Grace Eagen (Buffalo, N.Y. / West Seneca West) got things started for the Wolves in the bottom of the fifth.
Hali Jenner (Waverly, N.Y. Waverly) reached on an error, which moved Eagen over to second base.
Lauren Gilbert (Owego, N.Y. / Owego Free Academy) then hit a single to center field, bringing Eagen in for the first Keuka run of the game. The game went into the sixth inning with Alfred State up 5-1.
Alfred State extended their lead in the sixth, scoring four additional runs to go up 9-1. However, the Wolves had an immediate response.
Hailey Jasinski got on base with a single and
Makenna DeMoney brought her around the bases with a double to left center. The run scored by Jasinski made it a 9-2 game going into the final inning.
The Keuka defense held the Pioneers off the board in the seventh inning and got ready to rally.
Hali Jenner was the first on base for Keuka after drawing a walk and she advanced to second base on a fielder's choice play.
Haley Mascho (Bolivar, N.Y. / Bolivar-Richburg) then found some green, bringing Jenner in for another run.
Emily Cutrona (Buffalo, N.Y. / West Seneca West) singled to get on base and
Olivia Flynn (Williamson, N.Y. / Williamson) reached on an error, loading the bases for the Wolves.
Hailey Jasinski kept her bat hot and hit another single, bringing home another two runners.
Makenna DeMoney also recorded another hit in the game, which loaded the bases. A groundout play hit by
Grace Eagen brought in another run and moved the runners to second and third. Down by three with two runners on, the tying run was at the plate. However, the Alfred State defense held things down in the infield and got the final out of the game. The Pioneers won game one 9-6.
Alfred State 18 – Keuka College 5 (5 innings)
Alfred State scored two runs to start the game, but the Wolves were ready to respond. Leadoff batter
Emily Cutrona tripled to right field and scored on a wild pitch. The Pioneers led 2-1 after one inning.
The Pioneers found their offensive stride scoring eight runs in the top of the second inning and three more in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, Cutrona reached on an error and Jasinski hit a single to give the Wolves two baserunners. They each advanced on a wild pitch and
Makenna DeMoney drove both runners in with a double to left center.
In the top of the fourth, Alfred State added five runs to their lead to widen the gap to a 18-3 game. Back-to-back singles from
Lauren Gilbert and
Payge Granger (Camden N.Y. / Camden) gave the Wolves some life in the bottom of the fourth. Both runners scored on another set of back-to-back singles, this time from
Emily Cutrona and
Olivia Flynn.
The Keuka defense held the Pioneers off the board in the fifth inning, with pitcher
Olivia Flynn in the driver's seat. However, the gap was too large to close, and Alfred State won game two 18-5 in five innings.
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves ended their regular season games on Wednesday evening with a 13-20 record and a 6-8 conference record. The Wolves hope to get an Empire 8 playoff berth which will be dependent on a conference doubleheader on Saturday between Russell Sage College and Elmira College. The playoff game would be on Tuesday, May 7.
