KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — Keuka College Softball split in a set of non-conference matchups against Hilbert College.
Keuka College (10-15, 3-5 Empire 8) had three athletes record multiple hits on the day.
Emily VanDelinder (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) led the way with three hits and three RBI.
Hailey Jasinski (Buffalo, N.Y. / North Collins) and
Makenna DeMoney (Conklin, N.Y. / Susquehanna Valley) followed closely behind, each adding two hits for the Wolves.
Keuka College 10 – Hilbert College 9 (8 innings)
The Hawks scored to start the game in the top of the first but the Wolves had a quick answer.
Emily Cutrona (Buffalo, N.Y. / West Seneca West) started the inning with a single to center field and proceeded to steal second base.
Olivia Flynn (Williamson, N.Y. / Williamson) hit a deep fly ball into right field, which brought Cutrona home after the tag up at second. After Jasinski drew a walk,
Makenna DeMoney brought her home with a double. The game went into the second inning with the Wolves up 2-1.
Hilbert went on to score eight unanswered runs to bring the game to 9-2 going into the bottom of the fourth.
Grace Eagen (Buffalo, N.Y. / West Seneca West) gave the Wolves a baserunner when she reached second on an error and proceeded to steal third.
Emily VanDelinder followed it up with a single to give Keuka another run, bringing Eagen in to score. Flex player
Payge Granger (Camden N.Y. / Camden) hit a triple to left field to bring VanDelinder home for the last Keuka score of the inning, to make the score 9-4.
The Wolves held the Hawks off the bases in the fifth and sixth innings, with pitcher
Haley Mascho (Bolivar, N.Y. / Bolivar-Richburg) striking out three of the six Hilbert batters. In the bottom of the sixth,
Grace Eagen and
Emily VanDelinder each singled to give the Wolves runners on first and third.
Hali Jenner (Waverly, N.Y. Waverly) put the ball in play to bring Eagen in for the Keuka run.
The defense went to work in the top of the seventh, with three routine ground ball plays to send the game into the last half inning. The rally started with Mascho being hit by a pitch and an infield error to give the Wolves their first two base runners. This was followed up by Jasinski singling to center field to bring in a run. DeMoney drew a walk to load the bases for the Wolves. After a groundout play that moved the runners over and brought in one run, the Wolves found themselves within two runs. VanDelinder hit a single up the middle of the field to bring in the two base runners to tie the game 9-9. After the last Keuka out, the game went into extra innings.
With the baserunner starting on second in extra innings, the Keuka defense worked a double play to get themselves out of the half inning without giving up a run.
Hali Jenner was placed on second for the Wolves and quickly advanced to third after
Kaitlyn Holland (Leicester, N.Y. / York) put the ball in play in the infield.
Emily Cutrona then hit a ball to the shortstop to bring Jenner in for the final run of the game. The Wolves won 10-9 in eight innings.
Hilbert College 12 – Keuka College 1
The Hawks got out to a 3-0 score throughout the first three innings and extended the lead to 7-0 in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth
Hailey Jasinski and
Makenna DeMoney hit back-to-back singles to start the inning for the Wolves. Jasinski advanced to third on a fielder's choice play and then scored on a wild pitch to get Keuka on the board. The game went into the fifth inning with the score at 7-1.
Hilbert continued to control the game from the plate, extending their lead to 12-1 in the top of the fifth. The Wolves were unable to respond in the bottom of the fifth, and the Hawks won game two 12-1.
Up Next for Keuka College: The Green and Gold will travel to Utica University on Thursday, April 24 for a pair of conference matchups. The games are set for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
