CLERMONT, FLA.- The Keuka College Softball team dropped a game to St. Lawrence University on Friday morning and defeated the College at Old Westbury in their second game of the day to end their trip in Clermont, Florida.
Keuka College (1-9, 0-0 Empire 8) lost their first game of the day to St. Lawrence University 13-2. The Wolves bounced back in the second game, defeating the College at Old Westbury 4-3 in eight innings.
Keuka College 2 vs St, Lawrence University – 5 Innings - Game One
The Wolves took the lead early in game one when
Hali Jenner (Waverly, N.Y. / Waverly) doubled in
Makenna DeMoney (Conklin, N.Y. / Susquehanna Valley) to score the Wolves' first run of the game. From that point on, the Saints capitalized on every opportunity, scoring 13 runs across the first four innings of the game.
The Wolves threatened to score again in both the second and this innings by loading the bases, but were unable to cross the plate to bring the game closer.
The Wolves entered the fifth knowing they needed to score. With two outs,
Grace Eagen (Buffalo, N.Y. / West Seneca West) doubled to center field.
Shauna Pimm (Canisteo, N.Y. / Avoca) came up big for the Wolves with a single to right field, scoring Eagen and crossing one more run across the plate. Ultimately, that would be the end of the scoring for the Wolves, and they would lose 13-2 after 5 innings.
Lead Wolf: Sophomore transfer,
Hali Jenner, led the Wolves offense going 2 for 3 at the plate with a double in the first game while also starting the game in the circle for the Wolves.
The College at Old Westbury 3 vs Keuka College 4 – 8 Innings – Game Two
The Green and Gold were the first to score again in game two. With one out,
Joan Carroll Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) came up with a single to left field to bring in Eagen and score the Wolves' first run of the game. The Panthers were quick to come back in the top of the third after singling in a run of their own to tie the game.
From that point on, gameplay was even as both teams went back and forth unable to score. The Panthers were able to break through in the top of the seventh scoring two runs on an error by the Wolves.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh,
Hannah Longley (Hannibal, N.Y. / Hannibal) launched a ball to the right-center field fence scoring an inside the park homerun to bring the Wolves within one run. DeMoney doubled to left field with two outs to keep the Wolves alive and a single from
Kelsey Mohl (Averill Park, N.Y. / Averill Park) knocked in the game-tying run to send the game into extra innings.
The international tie-breaker rule went into effect, but the Panthers were not able to get a run across the plate. With a runner starting on second base,
Grace Eagen came up big for the Wolves again in the bottom of the eighth with a double to center field scoring Jenner and giving the Wolves a 4-3 win and their first win of the season.
Lead Wolf: Â Freshman
Grace Eagen saw the ball well at the plate all day and was a key factor in the Wolves first victory. Eagen went 3 for 4 at the plate in the second game of their doubleheader and knocked in the winning run for her one RBI of the game.
KC Notes:
- The Keuka College Softball team faced two new opponents for today's games against St. Lawrence University and the College at Old Westbury. Now the team has faced 99 different opponents in its 39 seasons in program history.
- In today's first game against St. Lawrence University, Kelsey Mohl achieved her 45th career hit and then surpassed that by getting another hit in game two of the doubleheader.
- The win in game two against the College at Old Westbury was the Wolves' first win of the 2023 season.
- Hannah Longley has had three consecutive games with at least one hit. She has also had at least one hit in seven of the ten games played down in Florida and has gotten on base in nine out of the ten games for the Wolves so far,
Up Next for Keuka College: The Keuka College Softball team has officially ended their ten game trip in Florida going 1-9. The Wolves will head back to New York and open up at home on April 1, 2023 with a doubleheader against SUNY Delhi at 1 pm.
