Field Hockey Downed by William Smith 7-0

GENEVA, N.Y. — The Keuka College Field Hockey team lost at William Smith College 7-0 on Wednesday evening in a non-conference game.

Keuka College (0-5) totaled 21 saves in the game with goalies Jordan Nichols making 16 and Linzie Michel making two. Adding to the total were field players Alex Roland and Jillian McGinley who made two and one defensive saves respectively.

The Herons controlled play throughout the evening. William Smith had 17 shots, 13 on goal in the opening 15 minutes. Most came through the run of play as William Smith had just three corners in the period. Jordan Nichols turned away 11 shots in the first, tying her career-high for a game. Adding in a defensive save by Roland, Keuka had 12 saves in the first 15 minutes, the most saves Keuka has made in an entire game all season. William Smith got on in to lead 1-0 after one.
The hosts took control of the game in the second quarter. They got a penalty stroke to open the score and continued onto four goals in the second. William Smith had a 33-0 shot advantage and led 5-0 at the half.

The offense slowed in the second half. William Smith scored two goals on four shots in the third. Keuka College had a pair of shots on goal in the fourth with Alexis Dodge and Makaela Mills getting the attempts. The shot by Mills got behind the goalie, but a William Smith player was there for the defensive save to preserve the 7-0 shutout.  

KC Notes:
  • While records date Keuka College playing William Smith in field hockey in the 1970s, Wednesday was the first ever varsity meeting between the two schools. It was the 33rd different opponent for Keuka College in the program's seven years
  • The 21 saves for the Wolves tie for the seventh-most in a game in program history
  • It was the first two defensive saves for Alex Roland and the third career DS for Jillian McGinley
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves return to their home turf this Saturday to open Empire 8 play. Keuka College will host Russell Sage College at 1 p.m. at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex. The Wolves and Gators have routinely played close, competitive games with Keuka College gaining a 1-0 shootout win and a 4-3 win in the three-game series.
