Women's Volleyball Loses Pair at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Volleyball team lost a pair of matches on Saturday at Clarkson University.

Keuka College (9-17, 3-5 Empire 8) lost to SUNY Cortland 3-1 to open the day. The Wolves were then swept by the host Golden Knights in the nightcap.

SUNY Cortland 3 vs. Keuka College 1 – 18-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-15

SUNY Cortland, ranked second in the region, jumped out to a quick 6-0 and 9-1 lead over the Wolves. The Wolves would rally. After a kill by Lillian Mueller, Keuka College added four more points on the serve of Kendra Waltz to cut the margin to one. The Red Dragons widened the lead again, but the Wolves scored six straight to take the lead. The run was on the serve of Ericka Carlson who hit three aces in the stretch. The Wolves held a 19-18 lead over Cortland and put the set away. Six straight for the Green and Gold, capped by a kill by Kelsie Allen, gave Keuka College a 25-18 first set victory.

Cortland once again jumped out to a fast start in the second set, building an 11-3 lead. The Wolves narrowed the gap late, but the Red Dragons leveled the match with a 25-17 second-set victory.

Five straight points for SUNY Cortland opened the third set, but Keuka College responded with six of their own to take the lead. SUNY Cortland would use smaller three and four-point runs during the back half of the set to take a lead over Keuka and win the third 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Red Dragons closed the match in the fourth set. SUNY Cortland scored the first 14 points of the set and continued onto the 25-15 victory.

Lead Wolf: Kendra Waltz paced the Wolves from the service line. The sophomore set a new career-high with four aces in the match. As a team, Keuka College had 12 in the match.

Clarkson University 3 vs. Keuka College 0 – 25-14, 25-18, 25-10

Clarkson combined an efficient attack with Keuka College errors to take control of the opening set. The Golden Knights won the first 25-14.

Keuka College played their best set of the match in the second. The Wolves had 12 kills in the frame against just four errors. Keuka held a 13-9 over Clarkson, but the host went on a run outscoring Keuka 11-2 to flip the lead to 20-15 in their favor. Clarkson took the second 25-18 to lead the match 2-0.

The Golden Knights controlled play in the third. They topped the Wolves 25-10 in the final set to sweep the match.

Lead Wolf: Megan McCann led the Wolves' attack with seven kills against the Golden Knights.

KC Notes:

  • The Wolves are winless in nine matches against SUNY Cortland
  • Clarkson has controlled the series with Keuka as of late. The Golden Knights have won eight straight over the Wolves. The all-time series is at 14-9 in favor of Clarkson
  • Keuka College had 75 digs against SUNY Cortland, including 21 from Lauren Kuipers. As a team, Keuka College has 1,590 this season, eighth-best in program history
  • Ericka Carlson surpassed 50 aces this season and 600 career digs in the match with SUNY Cortland

Up Next for Keuka College: Saturday concluded the regular season for Keuka College. Eyes are now forward on the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. Keuka College earned the five seed and will play at the four seed Elmira College on Tuesday night. The Soaring Eagles defeated the Wolves in four sets earlier in October.
