Wolves Fall to Gators in Final Minutes

COLONIE, N.Y. — A pair of fourth quarter goals downed Keuka College Field Hockey 3-2 in an Empire 8 match against Russell Sage College on Saturday.

McKenzie Hoyt scored both goals for Keuka College (4-9, 1-5 Empire 8).

Keuka College had a pair of early shots saved against the Gators in the opening minute, and Russell Sage answered on the counter. The hosts scored 1:55 into play for the early lead. The goal would be the only shot for Sage in the first, as Keuka outshot them 9-1, but the Gators led 1-0 after one.

The Wolves continued the offensive pressure in the second quarter. Their hard work paid off as Kirstin Billings set up McKenzie Hoyt for the first goal to tie the game at 1-1. Sage made 10 saves in the half, however. Despite shots being 22-2, the game was tied 1-1 at the half.

The Wolves pulled ahead midway through the third as Hoyt scored her second, making it 2-1. The shots were still in Keuka's advantage, 8-2, in the quarter and the game went to the fourth with the Wolves leading.

Midway through the fourth, Russell Sage tied the game with a goal. The Gators flipped the field on Keuka as they outshot the Wolves 3-0 in the final quarter. Then with 3:27 left to play, Russell Sage scored their third to pull ahead of the Wolves. Defense prevailed as neither team recorded a shot in the final minutes and Russell Sage defeated Keuka College 3-2.

  • The Wolves are now 2-1 all-time against Russell Sage College. All three games have been decided by one goal
  • With her two goals, McKenzie Hoyt now has seven on the season. She currently sits in a tie for third on the single-season list. She is also in a tie for sixth on the career goals list
  • Keuka College finished the game with a 30-7 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corners
  • The Wolves beat the goalie on multiple occasions but the Gators defenders cleared it off the line as Russell Sage had five defensive saves in the game

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves enter the final week of the regular season with three games left on the schedule. Keuka College will host Elmira College on Tuesday, October 26 at 4pm. The Wolves then step out of conference play and host the Oswego State Lakers on Friday afternoon before returning to Empire 8 action and closing the season on the road on Saturday at Hartwick College.
