Men's Lax Clinches NEAC Regular Season Title

Box Score

The Keuka College men's lacrosse team has captured the last two North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships, and on Wednesday, the Storm took the first step towards defending the NEAC title by securing the NEAC's regular season championship with a 24-3 win over Wells College in Aurora, N.Y.

The Storm (9-1, 6-0 NEAC) won their ninth straight, thanks to four goals and two assists from sophomore Cory Gray (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes), three goals and one assist from junior Mike Donals (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and two goals and five assists from classmate Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON/Genesee Community College).

Sophomore James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added three goals, freshman Matt Beebe (LaFayette, NY/LaFayette) handed out a career-high four assists and seniors Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Anthony Jones (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) each had three points to lead the Green and Gold.

Keuka will host a NEAC semifinal against an opponent to be determined on Wednesday, May 1. If the Storm win their semifinal, they will then host the conference championship on Saturday, May 4.

It was the eighth time in 10 games that Latimer, a two-time Junior College All-American at Genesee Community College, has scored at least five points in a game. Latimer, an attacker, leads the Storm in goals (29), assists (35) and points (64) and his 6.4 points per game currently leads all of Division III.

Against Wells, Latimer set the school record for points in a season, breaking Ryan Burton's mark of 60 points in a season, accomplished in 2007. Earlier this year, Latimer became the record holder for assists in a season.

Sophomore Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan), freshman Ryan Enright (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) and freshman Clayton Vaughn (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) each added two goals for the Green and Gold, who have outscored the competition 168-47 during the winning streak.

Junior Nick Scherer (Oneida, NY/Oneida), sophomore Jacob Bedosky (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and freshman Sam Cooper (Corning, NY/Corning) each added a goal for Keuka, which led 11-1 after one quarter and 18-3 at halftime.

Junior Brandon DeCaire (LaFayette, NY/LaFayette) caused three turnovers while Voigt, Jones, Luppino, and juniors Kaisch Wheeler (Phoenix, NY/Baldwinsville) and Kenny Cannon (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) each scooped up four groundballs as the Storm enjoyed a 51-28 edge in groundballs.

Wheeler went 12-for-16 on faceoffs while junior Jeff Roth (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was 7-for-14 for the Storm.

Keuka forced Wells into 24 turnovers and held the Express to just 11 for 19 on clear attempts.

Gray and Voigt each scored three times while Latimer and Luppino tallied two goals during the first quarter as Keuka led 9-0 just 8:35 into the contest.

After Daniel Munsell scored Wells' (1-10, 0-5) first goal with 5:39 remaining in the opening quarter, the Green and Gold went on a 9-1 run, capped by Cooper's goal with 5:56 remaining before halftime.

Wells scored the last two goals of the half, but the Storm held the Express scoreless over the final 33:07.

Sophomore Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) made three saves and allowed one goal in 18 minutes for the win. Freshman Dominic Camblin (Newark, NY/Newark), sophomore Scott Thielman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and junior Cameron Gormel (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) combined to allow two goals over the final 42 minutes.

Keuka closes out the regular season at Cazenovia College at 3 p.m. on Saturday before hosting a NEAC semifinal.
